The Sox are trying to get the most talented players that they can pay the least and control the longest. Some of this has come from internal development (look at Duran, Anthony, Mayer, etc) and some has come from trade (Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, Caleb Durbin, and more) and then we signed Ranger Suárez. The team now finds itself with a lot of affordable prospects. Sadly though, that means we don't have someone like Bregman who's already developed and is something of a known quantity.
They are good on starters / long relievers, and Chapman should be a good closer again. So it's just the meat of the bullpen that's a pitching concern. We have players for every role and also some depth (we have four potential Gold Glove / All-Star outfielders plus Yoshida who's not horrible). The main question always is, when dealing with young talent, can they step up?
This team should be fun to watch. I don't know if they have it to make it all the way, but by getting below the luxury tax they should be able to trade for a key-player at the deadline if needed or they can come back next season without fear of being a repeat luxury tax offender.
